BMW S58 Tuning
The S58 is BMW M's twin-turbo inline-six and one of the best engines to tune today. We build S58 cars for the street, the strip and the track, with the same data-first process we use on our own cars.
Cars with the S58
The 3.0L twin-turbo M engine with a forged crank and closed-deck block. Strong internals make it a great base for big power.
It powers the G87 M2, the G80 M3 and G81 M3 Touring, the G82 and G83 M4, and the F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M. Base and Competition cars share the same compression and turbos.
Drivetrain matters too. Base M3 and M4 cars use a 6-speed manual, while Competition cars use the 8-speed automatic in rear-wheel drive or M xDrive. The X3 M and X4 M are automatic and all-wheel drive.

S58 build paths
Typical wheel horsepower reported for S58 cars (stock is roughly 430-450 whp for base cars and 450-500 whp for Competition cars). Dynos differ by 10% or more, and results depend on the car, fuel and parts. We'll quote real expectations for your car before we start.

Software on a stock car. A huge jump, and still easy to drive daily.
- Stock car
- 93 octane or E-blends
- DME unlock where needed
Bolt-ons + tune
600-620 whpon 93 octane with downpipes
Supporting parts with a calibration written to use them properly.

- Intake and charge pipes
- Heat management
Built S58
740-760 whpstock turbos on E85 with port injection · 800-850 whp with upgraded twins
Turbo and fuel upgrades, tuned from logs until it's right.

- Drivetrain and cooling
Pump gas, ethanol and flex fuel
A stage 1 tune is commonly set up for 93 octane pump fuel, which most Dallas drivers can buy anywhere.
Ethanol adds power and knock margin, which helps a lot in a Texas summer. The S58 has direct injection only from the factory, and on full E85 the stock system is commonly reported to run out around 680 whp. Mid blends like E40 are a popular middle ground on the stock fuel system. Past that, we plan port injection and a low-pressure pump upgrade as part of the build.
A flex fuel sensor lets the tune adjust to the blend in the tank. Tell us how you fill up and we'll tune around it.
Newer cars, smart decisions
Most S58 cars are still fairly new, and many are under factory warranty. Modifying engine software can affect warranty coverage on related parts, so we talk it through with you before any work. Every car gets a digital inspection with photos and video, plus baseline logs before we touch anything.
- Gearbox: manual cars already run at the gearbox's torque rating from the factory, so any tune goes past it. We'll explain the tradeoff.
- Boost path: the factory plastic charge pipe is known to crack under boost, so we check it and plan an upgrade.
If something needs attention first, we'll show you why and handle it through our maintenance and repair service.
Heat is the real limit
The S58 uses air-to-water intercooling with separate low- and high-temperature cooling circuits. Competition cars add a transmission oil cooler. More power means more heat, and heat soak pulls timing on a hot day.
For track cars we look at an upgraded heat exchanger, an engine oil cooler and intake temperatures in the logs. Then we check brakes, alignment and fluids before you head out.
xDrive, RWD and the 8-speed
M xDrive cars and the X3 M and X4 M put power down well. Rear-wheel-drive cars need more care with traction at higher power.
The 8-speed automatic is commonly reported to handle around 750 lb-ft at the wheels. Beyond that, a built transmission belongs in the plan.
How an S58 tune works with us
Inspect and log
We confirm your engine and software from the VIN, inspect the car and record baseline logs before changing anything.
Tune for your setup
Boost, timing and fueling are set for your parts, your fuel and Texas heat. Your original software is saved where the platform allows.
Verify and refine
We log again after the tune and revise until it's right. Not local? We can tune remotely with log reviews.
Planning parts too? Our performance upgrades team sources, installs and tunes everything as one package. Coming from an older BMW? See our S55 M3 and M4 and B58 guides. We also offer detailing and ceramic coating.
S58 FAQ
Does my S58 need an ECU unlock?
Newer BMWs often need the engine computer unlocked before it can be flashed. It depends on build date and software. We'll check your car and handle it if needed.
Is a Competition car worth tuning?
Yes. Competition cars start with more power, so they gain a little less from a tune. Base and Competition cars share the same compression and turbos, and they tend to finish at a similar tuned number.
Can I tune a manual M2, M3 or M4?
Yes, with eyes open. The manual gearbox already runs at its torque rating from the factory, so any tune goes past it. We'll talk through your goals and how you drive before we tune.
Is the S58 safe on ethanol?
With the right tune and fuel system for the blend, ethanol is one of the best upgrades for an S58. We'll set up the blend your fuel system can support.
Can you set up an S58 for track days?
Yes. Along with the tune, we handle cooling, brakes, alignment and the checks a car needs before a track day.
Can I go back to stock?
On most cars, yes. Your original software is saved where the platform allows and can be flashed back. Ask us about your specific car.
Do you tune S58 cars remotely?
Yes. If you can't come to Dallas, we can work through remote tuning with log reviews and revisions.
Tuning availability and results depend on model year, software and hardware. Modifying engine software can affect warranty coverage on related parts, and some modifications are intended for off-road or competition use only. We'll confirm what's possible for your exact car before any work.
